How This Calculator Works
This calculator converts real power (KW) to current (Amps) for both single-phase and three-phase electrical systems, taking power factor into account.
Key Concepts:
- Real Power (KW): The actual power consumed by the equipment (working power)
- Current (Amps): The flow of electric charge through a conductor
- Voltage (V): The electrical potential difference
- Power Factor: Ratio of real power to apparent power (0 to 1)
Formulas Used:
Single Phase:
$$ I = \frac{P \times 1000}{V \times PF} $$
$$ I = \frac{P \times 1000}{V \times PF} $$
Three Phase:
$$ I = \frac{P \times 1000}{V \times \sqrt{3} \times PF} $$ $$ \text{Where } \sqrt{3} \approx 1.732 $$
$$ I = \frac{P \times 1000}{V \times \sqrt{3} \times PF} $$ $$ \text{Where } \sqrt{3} \approx 1.732 $$
Example Calculation
Single Phase Example:
Given: 5 KW at 230V with PF=0.8
$$ I = \frac{5 \times 1000}{230 \times 0.8} $$ $$ I = \frac{5000}{184} $$ $$ I = 27.17 \text{ Amps} $$
$$ I = \frac{5 \times 1000}{230 \times 0.8} $$ $$ I = \frac{5000}{184} $$ $$ I = 27.17 \text{ Amps} $$
Three Phase Example:
Given: 15 KW at 400V with PF=0.85
$$ I = \frac{15 \times 1000}{400 \times \sqrt{3} \times 0.85} $$ $$ I = \frac{15000}{400 \times 1.732 \times 0.85} $$ $$ I = \frac{15000}{588.88} $$ $$ I = 25.48 \text{ Amps} $$
$$ I = \frac{15 \times 1000}{400 \times \sqrt{3} \times 0.85} $$ $$ I = \frac{15000}{400 \times 1.732 \times 0.85} $$ $$ I = \frac{15000}{588.88} $$ $$ I = 25.48 \text{ Amps} $$
