How This Calculator Works

This calculator converts current (Amps) to apparent power (KVA) for both single-phase and three-phase electrical systems, taking power factor into account.

Key Concepts:

  • Current (Amps): The flow of electric charge through a conductor
  • Apparent Power (KVA): The vector sum of real power (KW) and reactive power (KVAR)
  • Voltage (V): The electrical potential difference
  • Power Factor: Ratio of real power to apparent power (0 to 1)

Formulas Used:

Single Phase:
S = (I × V) ÷ 1000
Where:
S = Apparent Power in KVA
I = Current in Amps
V = Voltage in Volts
(Note: Power factor is not needed for basic KVA calculation)
Three Phase:
S = (I × V × √3) ÷ 1000
Where √3 ≈ 1.732

Example Calculation

Single Phase Example:

20 Amps at 230V:
S = (20 × 230) ÷ 1000 = 4.6 KVA

Three Phase Example:

30 Amps at 400V:
S = (30 × 400 × 1.732) ÷ 1000 = 20.78 KVA
